Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 32-year-old woman struggling with my weight. I have tried every diet out there, and nothing seems to work. I have been battling with obesity for years, and it is affecting every aspect of my life. Currently, I weigh 172 pounds. Can you please guide me on whether anti-obesity medications might be a viable option for me? What are the risks and benefits? I am at a point where I am afraid for my health, and I would like to make a change. Please help me determine the best action to tackle this weight issue.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing, and I can understand your concern.

Anti-obesity medicines are accompanied by side effects such as generalized body weakness, diabetes (elevated blood glucose levels), hypertension (high blood pressure), and weakness in the bones and muscles. These are the main side effects associated with anti-obesity medicines, so I suggest you avoid taking these medicines. There are no other ways to lose weight other than diet and exercise. If you have tried diet and exercise, and if it has failed, then I suggest you go for a checkup because some underlying diseases might be causing weight gain. Diseases like hypothyroidism (a condition in which there is insufficient hormone production by the thyroid gland) can cause weight gain, and sometimes low metabolism can cause such weight again, so I suggest you do TFT (thyroid function test), LFT (liver function test), and CBC (complete blood count) test as these tests will help us know if there are any underlying causes for such weight gain so that we can treat it accordingly. However, you should continue following your diet and exercises.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
