Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am looking into ways to address wrinkles and signs of aging in my skin. Can you explain how retinoids work in skincare and if they are effective in reducing wrinkles? Additionally, are there other skin care tips or ingredients that can help with anti-aging? I am trying to understand my options for maintaining healthy and youthful skin.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hope you are doing well.

I have gone through the details provided from your end and I do understand your concern.

Anti-aging treatment is a holistic approach that includes diet, exercise, medications, skincare, and procedures done simultaneously for the best results. The treatment for anti-aging or graceful aging requires consistency to keep skin younger for the long term.

As mentioned from your end, retinoid or vitamin A derivatives are one such medication that can help with keeping skin looking youthful.

Vitamin A is available in the form of capsules, serums, and creams. It is important to understand the right way to use them and the formulation that you need to start with and then later build on. Retinoids or vitamin A derivatives help by increasing the peeling action of the skin and increasing the skin turnover quickly to remove dead cells and bring out a new skin layer from underneath.

It also helps in reducing oil secretion on the skin for acne-prone skin. It also acts by increasing the collagen production in the skin which is the component in one's skin that helps keep the skin elastic and plumper. It is always best to start with a retinol serum which is a mild variation of vitamin A.

When starting, make sure to use the same once a week only. Night-time application is advised. Avoid using retinol on wet skin. Skin is supposed to be clean and dry to help prevent itching, redness, and excessive burning sensation from retinol.

Make sure to let it get absorbed into the skin for at least five minutes before applying a good layer of moisturizer to prevent the drying up of the skin. They help in opening up the skin pores and anything applied on top gets absorbed well into the skin.

The next day morning, it is to be noted that sunscreen is very important to prevent sun exposure since sun exposure on skin treated with vitamin A can cause sensitivity.

Tretinoin cream is to be applied in a pea-sized amount preferably mixed with a moisturizer at night and to be applied in a dabbing motion to prevent redness and irritation on the skin. However, it should be taken only after it is prescribed by your dermatologist.

Medications like collagen powder, hyaluronic acid powder, hyaluronic acid serums, omega 3 capsules, vitamin E, and C capsules and tablets, and glutathione antioxidant pills are also good to help with graceful aging.

Procedures including hydrafacial, laser resurfacing of skin, collagen therapy with microneedling, and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) may also be done from time to time to keep skin younger. The most important component of a skincare routine that can prevent sun damage and premature aging is sunscreen. They need to be used every two to three hours from 9 am to 5 pm.

Drink loads of water to keep the skin young.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.

Take care.
